Hotel upgrade advice: claims to treat with caution

Upgrade advice is often presented as a trick. Most claims depend on the hotel, booking and programme, and some cannot be verified from outside the property.

“There is one perfect time to ask”

A hotel may record a request well in advance, decide closer to arrival or ask you to check at reception. Ask when it can consider the request instead of relying on a universal 24-hour formula.

“An empty premium room is available to give away”

A room visible online may have restrictions, may not be ready, may be needed later or may not be available for the whole stay. The hotel can explain what is actually available for your booking.

“Dress well and the desk will upgrade you”

There is no reliable basis for treating clothing as an upgrade strategy. Be clear and courteous because it makes the conversation easier, not because it creates eligibility.

“Mention any Gold status”

Tier names repeat across programmes but benefits differ. Confirm the actual programme, tier, participating hotel and rate. Never imply status the traveller has not supplied.

“Booking direct guarantees a better room”

A direct rate may qualify for benefits that some third-party rates exclude, but that does not make every upgrade guaranteed. Check the programme and booking conditions that apply.
